Decisions, Decisions, Decisions: The Path to Choosing a Career

By: Althea Marie D. Labajo

As children, most often think of what they will be in the future. Some young minds think of becoming princesses, knights, or dragons, and all fantastical things a young imaginative mind can dream of. As these children grow they think bigger, wider.

Some may venture into the arts, becoming artists, musicians, actors, some may go into medical fields, seeking to become doctors, nurses. So on and so forth.

There are many directions one may go, but the question is how do they go about choosing? With so many decisions laid upon their plates, how would they choose?

Well, I may be only one-in-a-billion, but I was once also a child dreaming of things bigger than I was and still am.

So here’s what I think you should consider when choosing a career.

Passion

According to the dictionary, passion is an intense desire or enthusiasm for something. Which is why I think this is one of the most important considerations a person should have when choosing a career. When choosing a career, a person should choose something that fulfills something in a person. Passion is important because this value ensures that a person actually enjoys their career and will preserve in said career for a long time.

As a child I once asked a relative on why they chose their career, they answered me with "Because I enjoy it and it makes me happy." This answer stuck to me, and it became the foundation of what career I am choosing to pursue now.

Skills and Strengths

I believe skills and strengths are important considerations when choosing a career. When deciding on a career, a person should think about what they are good at, but also what they are willing to learn and improve. Skills and strengths help a person feel confident in their work, and they play a big role in whether someone will succeed and feel fulfilled in their career.

However, not everything comes naturally to a person. If someone truly wants a career badly enough, they must be willing to learn new skills and develop strengths over time. Putting in the effort to grow helps a person avoid unnecessary struggle and allows them to genuinely enjoy their career. I have learned that dedication and practice can turn weaknesses into strengths, and this understanding has influenced how I approach choosing a career and preparing for my future.

Job Stability and Income

I believe job stability and income are important considerations when choosing a career. When deciding on a career, a person should think about whether that job can provide financial security and consistency in the long run. Having a stable career and reliable income helps a person feel secure and independent, which can reduce stress and allow them to focus on other aspects of life.

While money should not be the only reason someone chooses a career, it still plays a significant role. A steady income allows a person to support themselves, plan for the future, and live comfortably. Job stability is important because it provides reassurance that the effort and time put into a career will be worthwhile. Understanding the importance of stability and income has helped shape how I think about my future and the career path I want to pursue.

So, these are the things I believe a person should consider when thinking about a career. However, this is just my perspective. Every person is different, and everyone has their own situations, priorities, and values that influence their decisions. What works for one person may not work for another. Because of this, these thoughts should be taken as friendly advice rather than strict rules, meant to help guide an help when choosing a career path.
